Let me give you the back story if we don't know each other -

I grew up in a Lebanese household where food was love. (Can you relate?!)

So naturally I was an overweight kid but my family was too so I didn't think much of it.

Nothing really changed until my first job which was with Nordstrom department store...

I had a customer trying on jeans in the fitting room and she needed a smaller size. I grabbed a size 2 and headed back to the dressing rooms. As I was walking,

I looked down and caught a glimpse of my thigh, then looked at the waistband of the size 2 jean, down again at my thigh and up again at the waistband...

There was no way those things would fit my thigh!

That's when MY FIRST ALL-IN EFFORT began...

I was young, my metabolism was fast, and my first use of willpower could keep me from cookies for MONTHS!

Of course, I lost weight.

After a few months, the 'nothing' phase started at a dinner with friends...

which became a promise to start again Monday...

then next Monday.

My all-or-nothing efforts were

tracking my food when I was good, stopping when I went out or couldn't figure out how to track it.

Plotting my weight loss on a calendar: if I lose 3 pounds a week, I'll be 135 pounds by that wedding in July.

Eating SO well for breakfast... maybe lunch... and by dinner it was over. I was SO GOOD the first half of the day!

(May as well finish off the day with the ice cream and start again tomorrow.)

SO much wasted time, energy and money in my all-or-nothing efforts. I was starting to believe I couldn't be successful at this.

That was when I decided to go back to school and become a registered dietitian.

I learned an apple was healthier than a candy bar, the problem was, I still wasn't choosing it!

I explored psychology, learned how my brain worked and studied habit and behavior change.

I graduated in 2009, opened a private practice, applied what I learned with myself and my clients, and we FINALLY, successfully lost the weight permanently. No more ups and downs.

The Two Basic Principles are:

#1 Willpower is a MUSCLE, not a habit. We must use our willpower strategically or we'll use it up.

You and I, we actually have MORE willpower than most people, not less, because we've practiced using this muscle so much!!

#2 All-or-nothing thinking is a habit of thought that drives our all-or-nothing behavior. We can't just change our behaviors, we also have to change how we think.

I tell clients, you can't stop eating candy bars while still thinking CANDY BAR THOUGHTS and expect to lose weight permanently.

In order to get a different, permanent and sustainable result, you have to learn how to DO and THINK differently.
